Spray Foam – Geoff Hunt

Category: Webinar
  • Description

Description

Spray foam insulation remains controversial due to legacy issues, misinformation, and inconsistent assessments, highlighting the need for evidence-based evaluations, clear communication, and adherence to established inspection protocols.

Key Points:

  1. Legacy Misconceptions Drive Lender Caution
Despite advancements in open-cell and closed-cell spray foam technologies, many lenders remain hesitant due to historic issues with trapped moisture and poor installation. Outdated visuals and confusion over roof types (warm vs. cold) contribute to ongoing distrust.
  2. Accurate, Evidence-Based Surveying Is Essential
Professionals must follow inspection protocols and clearly separate fact from opinion. Where evidence is insufficient or risk is uncertain, condensation risk assessments and further investigations should be recommended rather than offering conclusive judgments.
  3. Industry-Wide Need for Clarity, Standards & Communication
Spray foam assessments should consider British Standards (BS 13788 vs. BS EN 15026), internal/external conditions, and vapour permeability of all roof layers. Surveyors and installers must improve their understanding to avoid unjustified condemnations or poor design outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Differentiate between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam products and their appropriate applications.
  2. Apply structured protocols when inspecting spray foam insulation to provide fact-based, risk-informed recommendations.
  3. Understand the importance of thermal modelling, condensation risk, and communication with lenders and clients in property assessments.
