There are fewer surveyors entering the profession than are needed to meet current demand, resulting in a significant—and increasingly critical—skills shortage, particularly in the UK. A 2025 RICS report highlights that an ageing workforce, with many professionals approaching retirement, is not being replaced quickly enough by younger entrants.
The shortage is most acute in Building Surveying and Quantity Surveying. Key factors contributing to this include the high proportion of surveyors nearing retirement age (even if many seem reluctant to step away), a perception that the profession is less exciting than alternative career paths, and the complexity of the training and qualification process.
Although the situation is becoming more of an issue, it has also created a candidate-led market. This is driving higher salaries, improved benefits, and increased opportunities for those choosing to enter the profession.
At CPD essentials Ltd, we are hoping to address this by launching a new mentoring opportunity available for surveyors looking to enhance their professional development and expand their industry network. This initiative aims to pair experienced professionals with early-career or aspiring surveyors, creating a supportive environment for knowledge sharing, career guidance, and skills development. We are currently seeking experienced surveyors to volunteer as mentors, offering their expertise to help guide the next generation of professionals while also gaining fresh perspectives and giving back to the industry. The amount of time mentors choose to commit is entirely flexible and can be tailored to fit individual schedules, making it easy to get involved regardless of other professional commitments. Depending on the mentors available, participants may benefit from one-to-one online or in person mentoring sessions, practical insights into current industry challenges, and advice on achieving chartered status and long-term career goals. Whether you are looking to mentor or be mentored, this programme provides a valuable platform to grow, connect, and succeed in an evolving surveying landscape.
Please contact Alison Plenderleith on if you are interested in becoming a mentor or signing up to the scheme as a mentee. Alternatively complete this online form.
Thank you
