SUMMARY:Tree identification
DESCRIPTION:Tree identification \nSpeaker – Philp Santo \nPhilip Santo is a Fellow of RICS with over 35 years experience as a residential surveyor and valuer. He has acted as a consultant for RICS\, representing RICS on the Council of Mortgage Lenders Valuation Panel and undertaking a range of project work within the Residential Professional Group. Philip contributed to the major review of the Red Book Mortgage Valuation Practice Standard in 2011\, the Guidance Note on the Valuation of New-build Residential Homes and Information Papers including Comparable Evidence in Property Valuation and Automated Valuation Models. \n  \nDuring 2012 Philip led the cross-industry working group which produced the RICS Information Paper on Japanese Knotweed and Residential Property and helped to facilitate the establishment of the Invasive Weeds Control Group under the auspices of the Property Care Association (PCA). \n  \nMost people take for granted that trees are an important part of our residential environment while\, as professionals\, we recognise that they can influence values and physically impact on structures. But do we appreciate them as distinct individuals? There are three good reasons why we should: \n\nClients should be advised appropriately about implications for prospective ownership;\nThe courts expect us to be able to identify certain species which may pose a risk to buildings;\nThere is a simple pleasure in being better informed about our natural surroundings!\n\nUsing numerous illustrations\, this session will explain how to easily identify some of the most common species of trees\, with a focus on those which pose a particular risk to buildings. It will also explain why February is an ideal time of year to start improving skills at tree identification.

SUMMARY:Sustainable timber specification
DESCRIPTION:The UK building industry consumes millions of tonnes of timber a year. Whilst in the past the sources of this timber were entirely unregulated\, today greater awareness of the significant environmental damage thoughtless timber specification can cause has led to the introduction of many different certification schemes – some good\, some not so good. \nThe speaker will demonstrate that experience has shown that just specifying ‘sustainable timber’ does not always lead to ‘sustainable timber’ being used. \nThe speaker is Charlie Law from PEFC\, who has over 30 year’s experience in the construction sector and extensive industry knowledge having worked for BAM\, Kier and Lendlease. \nHe is also Sustainability Director at Timber Development UK (TDUK) and a member of Grown in Britain Executive. \nThe session explains what schemes are available\, and where they can go wrong and explores ways of designing out the risk of unsustainable timber being used in the first place. \nWe will also look at the use of timber in cladding. With timber being an increasingly popular choice as a sustainable material cladding we’ll explore the specific pitfalls associated with use.

The NASC produce over 100+ Safety\, Health\, Technical\, Contractual\, Purchasing Guidelines\, Asset Protection\, Environmental and Sustainability Guidance\, as well as publishing TG20 Operational Guidance and software for Tube & Fitting scaffolding and SG4 Preventing falls in scaffolding operations\, which are the key guidance documents for the UK scaffolding industry. \nSpeakers \nDavid Brown is our current NASC President and Managing Director of IBN Scaffold Access Ltd. David started in the Construction Industry as a Quantity Surveyor for a Main Contractor before moving into the Scaffolding Industry and is very keen to impart his knowledge and experience to improve and cement principal contractor – contractor relationships. \n Steve Kearney is the NASC H&S Manager and has been involved in the scaffolding industry for forty-five years (and was until quite recently the HSEQ director of a very large scaffolding and hire & sales group). Steve is the ‘help desk’ for ad hoc industry-related H&S enquiries from members and others and acts as secretary for the NASC Health & Safety Committee. \n Tony Barry is Director of the Construction Industry Scaffolders Recognition Scheme (CISRS)\, which is often pronounced as scissors). CISRS is the oldest CSCS card system and was introduced in 1975. Tony has been in the scaffolding industry for over forty years and is now at the forefront of learning and development within this sector. \n  \n
