SUMMARY:Sustainable timber specification
DESCRIPTION:The UK building industry consumes millions of tonnes of timber a year. Whilst in the past the sources of this timber were entirely unregulated\, today greater awareness of the significant environmental damage thoughtless timber specification can cause has led to the introduction of many different certification schemes – some good\, some not so good. \nThe speaker will demonstrate that experience has shown that just specifying ‘sustainable timber’ does not always lead to ‘sustainable timber’ being used. \nThe speaker is Charlie Law from PEFC\, who has over 30 year’s experience in the construction sector and extensive industry knowledge having worked for BAM\, Kier and Lendlease. \nHe is also Sustainability Director at Timber Development UK (TDUK) and a member of Grown in Britain Executive. \nThe session explains what schemes are available\, and where they can go wrong and explores ways of designing out the risk of unsustainable timber being used in the first place. \nWe will also look at the use of timber in cladding. With timber being an increasingly popular choice as a sustainable material cladding we’ll explore the specific pitfalls associated with use.

David started in the Construction Industry as a Quantity Surveyor for a Main Contractor before moving into the Scaffolding Industry and is very keen to impart his knowledge and experience to improve and cement principal contractor – contractor relationships. \n Steve Kearney is the NASC H&S Manager and has been involved in the scaffolding industry for forty-five years (and was until quite recently the HSEQ director of a very large scaffolding and hire & sales group). Steve is the ‘help desk’ for ad hoc industry-related H&S enquiries from members and others and acts as secretary for the NASC Health & Safety Committee. \n Tony Barry is Director of the Construction Industry Scaffolders Recognition Scheme (CISRS)\, which is often pronounced as scissors). CISRS is the oldest CSCS card system and was introduced in 1975. Tony has been in the scaffolding industry for over forty years and is now at the forefront of learning and development within this sector. \n  \n

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act
DESCRIPTION:Date: 24 April 2025 \nSpeaker: Richard Snape \nTime: 17:00-18:00 (with time for questions at the end) \nThe Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 introduces significant reforms\, including banning new long residential leasehold houses (with exceptions)\, extending lease terms to 990 years\, and giving leaseholders more rights to enfranchise and challenge charges. Ground rent reforms and administration charges are capped or abolished in many cases\, with judicial reviews delaying some implementations. Commonhold reforms are proposed to make it the default for new flats\, and the Act also strengthens protections under the Building Safety Act 2022 and establishes redress schemes for both leaseholders and freeholders.

DESCRIPTION:Date: 8 May 2025 \nSpeaker: Brian Scott\, HistoGlass \nTime: 17:00-18:00 (with time for questions at the end) \nThis CPD will explore different historic glazing types and which types were used in which era (to which vernacular it belongs).
